Using the Secure Browser Application with Accessibility Software

For students using non-embedded accessibility tools, the secure browser application provides the option for assessments to be taken in less restrictive environments. This option, known as Permissive Mode, temporarily allows students who need accessibility tools to navigate between the secure browser application and approved applications that are necessary for taking a state assessment. Permissive Mode should be assigned to the student as a setting in the Test Information Distribution Engine (TIDE) prior to testing. With the availability of Word Prediction (Co:Writer) in the Test Delivery System (TDS), the use of permissive mode may be minimized.  If a student is only using supports embedded within TDS, (for example, not using a non-embedded accessibility tool), permissive mode should not be enabled. For more information and instructions, refer to the Test Delivery System (TDS) User Guide, and the instructions for Setting Up TDS Workstations page on the Texas Assessment website.

If you have questions about whether specific technology-based accommodations meet these guidelines, contact the most appropriate person in your district (e.g., technology staff, curriculum staff).
