The Student Testing Site includes an embedded American Sign Language (ASL) tool that is available to students with the appropriate accommodation. Instructions for using this tool are provided in the Test Delivery System (TDS) User Guide.

If a student requires in-person signing from a test administrator, that test administrator can connect a second laptop or monitor to the student’s device to mirror the student’s screen. As the student progresses through the test, the test administrator can see the test content on their own screen and provide sign language interpretation as needed.

Screen mirroring should be set up before the student begins testing. In order to mirror the student’s screen on the test administrator’s device, each device must include a video port. When mirroring displays, be sure to select the option to “mirror” or “duplicate” the student’s display rather than selecting the “extended” display option, which would not duplicate the screen and may cause issues with the secure browser application.

The instructions in this section are for using an HDMI cable to connect the two devices.  However, supported video ports vary by device, and different cable types or adapters may be needed. Please consult the IT personnel at your campus to determine which cables and adapters are appropriate for the devices in use.

Please note: For older machines that require an SVGA cable, please consult your IT personnel for assistance setting up mirroring.

Setting Up Screen Mirroring on Windows Devices

  1. To set up screen mirroring on a Windows device, first connect an external monitor to the Windows device using the appropriate cable or adapter types.

  2. Open Settings from the Start menu on the student’s device.

  3. Click either Display or System > Display, and then click Duplicate these Displays. The student’s display should now appear on the connected monitor.

Setting Up Screen Mirroring on macOS Devices

MacOS devices can be mirrored to an external monitor or to an iPad.

Mirroring macOS Devices to an External Monitor

  1. To set up screen mirroring between a macOS device and an external monitor, first connect an external monitor to the macOS device using the appropriate cable and/or adapter types.

  2. If the screen mirrors automatically, no further action is required. If the screen does not mirror automatically, open System Preferences > Displays on the student’s device and select the connected monitor from the Display dropdown. The student’s display should now appear on the connected monitor.

  • On macOS 10.14 devices, users may need to open the Arrangements tab and select Mirror Display.

Mirroring macOS Devices to an iPad

These steps can be performed for devices running macOS 10.15 or later.

  1. To set up screen mirroring between a macOS device and an iPad, first make sure both the iPad and macOS device are signed in to the same iCloud account. Also make sure that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are turned on for each device.

  2. On the macOS device, open System Preferences > Displays.

  3. From the Add Display dropdown menu, select iPad.

  4. In the Display Settings section, select the connected iPad to be a mirror display. The student’s display should now appear on the iPad.

Setting Up Screen Mirroring on Linux Fedora Devices

  1. To set up screen mirroring on a Linux Fedora device, first connect an external monitor to the Fedora device using the appropriate cable and/or adapter types.

  2. If the screen mirrors automatically, no further action is required. If the screen does not mirror automatically, open Settings.

  3. Click Displays, and then click Mirror under Display Mode. The student’s display should now appear on the connected monitor.

Setting Up Screen Mirroring on Chromebooks

  1. To set up screen mirroring on a Chromebook, first connect an external monitor to the Chrome OS device using the appropriate cable and/or adapter types.

  2. Open Settings.

  3. In the search bar, type Display. Click Display and then select Mirror Built in Display. The student’s display should now appear on the connected monitor.
